| Facts Myths & Lies of D.I.Y. Music 1987-1993
|
Back before email and mp3's, if you were bored with the fodder they were serving you on the radio, a lot of people just started making their own music and trading with other people making their own music. All ages, all styles with one thing in common. A desire to do it! Some people did find a way to make it into a professional studio, but the vast majority of folks were recording in their garages and living rooms on 2 and 4 track cassettes. It was a universal format, so it made it easy to trade internationally too. My buddies and I had been recording stuff on the weekends in the garage for a while without any real purpose in mind, then in 1986 at the San Diego Com Con I met Bob X's brother, a guy named Johnny Primitiv, and he told me that he'd been sending his homemade electronic music tapes to college radio stations, and had been getting a pretty good response. The fuse was lit! We produced 1000 of our first tape as a group called Hermanos Guzanos, what some people would call a sludge-rock band. The members were Brian James Riedel, Gary Wray and myself. We chose a misspelled Mexican name just to confuse people. I started sending cassettes around the world, to magazines, to radio stations, and mostly to other home tapers. I built up a fairly sizable collection over the years, & I can't bear to see all this great music not get heard, so I'm going to share the best of it here with you. Some of these people might not be around anymore and some went on to get recording contracts, but either way, it's time to give this stuff a listen one more time in case you missed it the first time! There's no particular sequence or timeline to the order and if you see or hear something you just gotta have, make me an offer in the comments!
