T. Griffin is a New York City Based songwriter and soundtrack artist who creates hushed, intense story songs with a junk-store electronic vibe. He calls his sound "porch techno" for it's combination of acoustic instrumentation, damaged beats and creaky samples. His debut CD, TORTUGA was recorded in a 6x10 room on a 4-track and a power-mac, and has been receiving steadily increasing acclaim (see below). Griffin started out smothering his lyrics in sheets of distortion with Minneapolis' Bertha's Mule in the early 90's, then quit music in '93 to pursue an acting career which brought him to New York in 1997. In New York songs started sneaking up on him again and he began the year long process that resulted in TORTUGA. This time there were no sheets of distortion, just a quiet, detailed intensity that has been compared to Tom Waits (without the gravel), Nick Drake and Vic Chesnutt. Why the change from noise in quiet Minneapolis to such quiet in noisy New York? "No need to make noise here. They've got people to do it for you." Most recently Griffin contributed music alongside Sparklehorse to AMBER CITY by acclaimed filmmaker Jem Cohen (FUGAZI: INSTRUMENT, LOST BOOK FOUND). Griffin is currently recording the follow-up to TORTUGA (which he calls "a laptop NEBRASKA") all over the country "on a minidisc walkman and a powerbook."
