| Graphic Recliner
|
Graphic Recliner has always been for the most part a recording band. We started playing and recording in Dave's living room around 1997 affectionately called the home for geriatric stereo equipment. Dave would record through a pair of mics in the room run into a suitcase with a mic placed in a pair of headphones that would produce a delay effect on everything. No conversation was intelligible. We have bushels of those cassette tapes. Our recording setup got better over the years - reel to reel - ADAT - and now a computer based set-up running what appears to be the abandon ware TRACKTION - perfect. In all this time we never actually wrote any music. It was always about recording everything and then cull from the herd later. Live improvisation that on good nights was very satisfying, even on bad nights we had fun. Dave is an electric kalimba - mbira builder. He also makes some instruments that he invented - Violimba - The Chong - Lulliby stick, which is the music box like mechanism from an old Ficher Price kid toy record player mounted on a handle with a piezo and quarter inch jack so you can plug it into whatever effects you have and go from there. His things can be seen and heard on his web site Ekalimba.com and Odd Music. The ussual line-up instrumentally - Dave and Fletcher generally play Dave's creations - Jennifer plays flute - Bruce plays various percussion - Jon plays guitar - Hans and Susan play keyboard but never met face to face, Sue moved away by the time Hans joined us. Hans is also an incredible percussionist. And many times we all would pick up and play Dave's creations. The Saturday night prayer meeting of Graphic is at least half of what beer and smokes us together as much as anything...drone on.
